Volos is a coastal port city located in the middle of mainland Greece. It was the homeland of mythological hero Jason, who boarded the ship Argo accompanied by the Argonauts and sailed in quest of the Golden Fleece to Colchis. Nowadays, it is an important industrial center and its port provides a bridges Europe, Middle East and Asia. Volos is the newest of the Greek port cities, with a large proportion of modern buildings erected following the catastrophic earthquakes of 1955. A few km away the Mount Pelion with its majestic villages Portaria and Makrinitsa offer a picturesque sight with their cobblestone streets, green scenery , mansions, stone fountains and churches. A trip to the North at Meteora, a rock formation in Central Greece, offers the unique experience of nature’s grandeur in conjunction with history due to impressive monasteries, architecture and man’s everlasting desire to connect with the Divine.
