Located in Northern Greece, It is the second largest city of the country and the most significant town of Macedonia district. Built at the back of the Thermaïkos Gulf, it is a modern metropolis bearing the marks of its stormy history and its cosmopolitan character, which give it a special beauty and charm. Thessaloniki, with its host of Byzantine monuments justifiably is considered an open-air museum of Byzantine art. Wandering through the city, it is worthwhile to see the churches of Acheiropoietos, White Tower, Byzantine walls, Heptapyrgion castle. Of great historical importance is also Vergina, in northern Greece near Thessaloniki, which is the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia
