Syros has been inhabited since the Stone Age and its capital Ermoupolis is full of neoclassic buildings positioned amphitheatrically. It has been the first important trade and industrial center of the country in the 19th century. Evidence of its glorious past can be seen on public buildings such as the City Hall, the Customs Office and “Apollo” theatre, on the neoclassical houses and at the beautiful squares.
